Lambada's refit 2006 ²
  Monday 08 May 2006 - 11:58:58 | Webmaster

lambadakomt_uit_water020206.jpg February/March 2006 Lambada was taken out the water at the Curacao Marine yard.

The hull wet part was stripped from all antifouling and epoxy tar, and sanded with 100 grit and one foot layer of glass was added in view of our planned trip to Patagonia to both hulls from the water line.
Starboard_bow_bulb.jpgThe Bow bulbs were reshaped from plump round, to a droplet shape and glassed with 2 layers of very heavy glass, to obtain a 4mm thickness.
After the glassing was completed, both hulls were set with 24liter of the British COPPER COAT 2kg 95% pure copper per liter epoxy.
Applying_first_coat_CopperCoat.jpgThe epoxy was hard to stick at first but after a full day work with 2 man and a mixer one hull was completed, it took 5 day's to fully cure in and in, the temperature at 32 C or 90 F was a problem, concerning fast work as it precured at end of 1 liter rolling, we used the 10 cm wide roller not, to get too tired, as we observed an other boat earlier done in St Maarten, the coppercoat didn't stick to stainless steel we think of etching the SST rudders first with copper and try again with copper coat in due coarse.

As we had lost a rudder after hitting an object halfway between Cape Hatteras and StMaarten, we made 2 new SST rudders and at the same time made an emergency rudder helm, witch can be fitted on either rudder depending on the easiest place to stay if the hydraulics would fail.
Both hulls the outside, were also sanded and painted with the Antillean Polyurethane enamel white.

As my fingers don't able to work in difficult places anymore, the anchor winch was replaced by a new Lewmar maintenance friendlier winch and the deck in way of reinforced and to save weight we replaced the gypsi and chain, the chain is now 150m 8mm schedule 70 hotdip galvenized saving 80kg on the bow.
motorpainted.jpgBoth engines were lifted out the engine room to enable a thorough clean up and paint job. In the engine room at the same time both engines were paint stripped and repainted with a heat resistant engine paint, this as the epoxy paint blisters were a pain in the bilge, both engines exhaust manifold and coolers and exhaust outlet were also renewed, Port engine fuel filter was renewed by a Raycor type filter, and both engines fuel hoses were replaced by a class A1 approved hose.
The arch was removed the holding down bolts renewed and the through's filled with epoxy, the arch was reinforced in the corners and rebedded with 3M5200 .
Engine_back_in_place.jpg

The heater diesel tank fuel connection was renewed to stop a minor leak both diesel tanks (geny and heater) were cleaned out.

In view of our planned Patagonia trip we fitted a Webasto DBW2010 hot water heater which can also act as a chilled water unit with a to the sea bed lowered submersible pump, at the sea bed the water temperature is substantial lower as the above air temp. and the little fans and 2 running pumps require much less amps as a full blow AC units for the complete boat.
To ensure no power shortage we installed a Kingfisher 1 cylinder 150AH generator and water maker Hp pump unit as well as 2 new 165 Ah solar panels giving us easy 25 amps with clear sunshine on all panels, to make up with the power hungry fridge and freezer of minus 12 C/10 F.

To ensure our safety, a GMDS Icom 602 VHF was added as well as a Icom 802 SSB and because of 3 occasions were we were not noticed or seen by ships we also added an AIS yacht transponder, brand new for yachts not yet out of the teething problems but already worth the money, in particular if you have to single hand for example the English channel.
As we grow older and are less capable to lift the dinghy by hand with a heavy outboard, we made a hoist boom, so both can be lifted easy with one of the sheet winches.

To moore stern to the rocks, we added 2 rope reels with 100 m 5/8 nylon and added an extra aluminum 20kg Spade anchor.
We renewed all sails and as the new main sail was not dropping nicely with the battens the batten pockets were redone to full battens and is working much better now.

Ready.jpg

Planned in the near future, while under way to Patagonia, we will replace the Epirb by the latest model, renew the saloon and cockpit windows and to save weight, we will replace our steel gas bottles by the new epoxy types.
Obviously more points will come up but at present we already feel prepared to go.

Wednesday 3rd May the boat passed harbour inspection on all safety items and all comunication equipment re registered with MMSI 3066060000

  Monday 08 May 2006 - 00:03:00 | Webmaster

roling to the ramp031806.jpgFebruary/March 2006 Lambada was taken out the water at the Curacao Marine yard. Read the details of this major refit here: Link

After almost a month of hard work, the Lambada is back where it belongs.
In the water...!

Both engines where stripped and thoroughly cleaned, primered and repainted in Catarpillar Yellow.

The bottom was cleaned, stripped and repainted with a good couple of layers of CopperCoat. Now this will stay for a few years, helping against any growth... and giving the Lambada it's wellknown speed again.

See more photos of the maintenance work in the gallery here.

 Snapshot
Enhanced with Snapshots

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more. Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not. Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.
