The Canary Islands fairytale early 2009

When we arrived in Lanzarote we called port control on the radio as we where coming from Morocco under Antillean flag thus required clearing in with customs and immigration, once in the harbor, we where chased away by port police thus we went to the fishing harbor and got from the same police officer 2 hours to stay.
When he noticed when the police head quarters send us away we where asking around  he turned helpful and took me to the main port immigration where we cleared in, customs was not required, 4 months later customs visited us in Las Palmas onboard recorded all ships information already passed to the marina office, all was a big joke.

We went to Puerto Calero to get out the water and do damage repair due to kiwi prop failures, again for the 2nd time no reverse, here we ordered many things, but surprise, we had to pay import duties despite a yacht in transit under foreign flag is free from vat etc, but not in the Canaries, they do as they like, also it takes 4 weeks to receive a parcel and sometimes the postal system refuses to deliver to the marina and only with a tracking number they are willing to help you, even if you see your parcel in the post office on the shelf, forget it.

USA gas bottles are refused to be filled but European BP bottles where no problem and only 12 Euro for 10 kg, these islands prove that gas gasoline and diesel prices are pumped up by the governments, as here you pay E 0.60 for gasoline, E 0.55 for diesel, prove that people sending me chain letters to protest the oil companies are wrong they should address their governments.

In Las Palmas our dog Sydney earned his stripes as security officer when 3:30 in the morning an armed robber came onboard but he fled when Sydney chased him, as we didn’t see the robber, we went back inside, not for long as their was a lot of screaming and help calls on the pontoon, apparently the robber fled to a neighboring boat, entered and stabbed the skipper 3 times resulting in dangerously wounded skipper, Matty called 112 and I fitted pressure bandages to stop the artery bleeding, when the ambulance and police arrived he was safe, but the robber fled, he was to fast for me.
Security is stepped up now and it is quiet for the past month, but in a big city, men can expect this to happen again.

The city Las Palmas is big and busy we rented a car and crossed the island with an excellent infra structure, we even did unpaved roads, like when we did in the past with the motor bike there is so much more to see, it would be marvelous to rent a Trike and backpack into the middle of no where, in the car you watch the movie on a bike you are in the movie.

Las Palmas was during February and March always cold and rainy around 18 degrees in the south it was nice and warm in the dunes.

The time spend here was to get spares and we stripped the decks from the old paint and removed all the prone to leakage sail tracks and built a complete new paint system, also we removed the old under deck ceiling strips and rock wool insulation and fitted 10 mm X-TREM insulation we notice the difference.

Now it’s getting time to varnish and fit the new ceiling plywood sheets new cupboard doors and we have again a modern boat.
So you see although we are staying a long time here, our time is well spent.

 Snapshot
Enhanced with Snapshots

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more. Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not. Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.
